How one Sydney scaleup is helping global businesses deal with the challenges of Covid-19

Compliance is a complex but vital task for companies of all sizes – now, more than ever – as businesses struggle to keep up-to-date and comply with ever-evolving Covid-19 restrictions.

Fast-growing Australian technology company, SafetyCulture, is helping firms the world over navigate these challenges – and more – on a daily basis.

SafetyCulture is the operational heartbeat of working teams around the world. Its mobile-first platform leverages the power of human observation to identify issues and opportunities for businesses to improve every day.

Founded in 2004 as a safety documents business by CEO Luke Anear in his Townsville garage, SafetyCulture now powers over 600 million checks per year.

More than 28,000 organisations use its apps to perform checks, train staff, report issues, automate tasks and communicate fluidly.

The Surry Hills-based company achieved unicorn status in 2020, but is now valued at over $2 billion, having grown significantly during the Covid-19 pandemic, as companies around the world leaned on its flagship iAuditor app to comply with standards and regulations.

When the outbreak first started, SafetyCulture launched a free COVID-19 resource hub that provided companies with practical information and guidance on how to navigate the pandemic. Today, 75,000 people worldwide are using iAuditor to complete daily COVID-19 inspections.

“COVID taught us how important our products are to our customers. It really highlighted the need to be able to manage risk in the workplace and to be able to share information very quickly across teams,” Luke told the Australian Financial Review in May, 2021.

For high-growth companies like SafetyCulture, it’s important to have somewhere to help embed a culture of innovation and teamwork.

“Being surrounded in Tech Central by like-minded businesses helps build connection and collaboration within the tech and startup community,” says Chief Technology Officer, James Simpson.

For example, the recently launched Aussie Tech for India Joint Relief Program was an initiative born in Tech Central, spearheaded by Canva and joined by SafetyCulture, Airtasker, Airtree Ventures and Blackbird Ventures.

SafetyCulture will be relocating to a custom-built Surry Hills headquarters in 2021. The $38 million ultra-modern office will be designed to drive greater collaboration, innovation, and culture for their teams, as SafetyCulture seeks to transform the working experience for millions of teams around the world.

"The launch of Tech Central will create a vibrant tech community that attracts top tier tech talent and provide a creative space for initiatives that will nurture emerging innovators and entrepreneurs," said James.

“As the last 12 months have demonstrated, the tech sector is stronger when different companies come together with a common goal.

“Connection and collaboration is key to this and we are excited by any Tech Central initiatives that encourage community spirit in this sector – whether it’s networking events or specialist training – opportunities to collaborate at close proximity will help businesses accelerate their pace of work.”
