Atlassian to establish its Australian headquarters in the heart of Tech Central

Australia’s largest tech company says the launch of Tech Central will establish Sydney as an innovation hub on par with the likes of Silicon Valley and Tel Aviv, attracting top-tier talent from around the globe.

The company, which has more than 236,000 customers and over 6,000 employees worldwide, is a leading provider of software that helps teams work together around the world. Its products have helped NASA teams design the Mars Rover, Cochlear teams develop hearing implants and hundreds of thousands of other teams do amazing things.

Atlassian, founded in Sydney in 2002 by university friends Scott Farquhar and Mike Cannon-Brookes, was recently valued at more than $100 billion USD.

Atlassian has long been a vocal ambassador for the creation of a tech hub in Sydney and is committed to developing an ecosystem with the NSW Government so that a new generation of Aussie entrepreneurs can thrive.

In line with this commitment, Atlassian is establishing its Australian headquarters in the heart of Tech Central and will accommodate 4,000 workers in what will be the world’s largest hybrid timber building upon completion in 2026.

The striking design – located adjacent to Central Station – will incorporate the heritage-listed Parcel Shed and be 100% powered by renewable energy from day one.

“If you look around the world the best technology countries have a physical place they can point to and call home - whether it's Silicon Valley, Tel Aviv or Singapore. We're thrilled to be able to add Sydney to that list,” said Atlassian Chief of Staff, Amy Glancey.

Technology is the third-largest contributor to Australia’s GDP at $167 billion a year. Atlassian believes that Sydney has the potential to be one of the world’s leading technology cities and in doing so, will help the industry surpass mining and finance as the nation’s leading sector with the potential to contribute $250 billion by 2030. Attracting world-class talent to Sydney – and retaining it – is a challenge for most companies, particularly when there is an abundance of overseas opportunities for Australians.

“The tech sector currently employs over 850,000 Aussies per year - and that number is growing fast - it’s critical we create a centre of gravity for the tech community. We know that creating a physical home for Australia’s tech community will help attract and develop top talent which we need to compete on the world stage,” said Amy.

The NSW Government has committed to facilitating 250,000 square metres of office space at Tech Central, which stretches several kilometres from Central Station to Camperdown, including South Eveleigh.

Tech Central will provide 50,000 square metres of affordable space for startup and scaleup businesses and is predicted to bring up to 25,000 new jobs to NSW. “We want Tech Central to be known as the epicentre of the Australian technology industry. A place where future generations will come to learn about technology, to hear about the great ideas that were born in this precinct, and to consider a job in this fast-growing and dynamic industry,” said Amy.
