Tech Central, six neighbourhoods in the heart of Sydney
WHERE HISTORY, CULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY MEET
Creative industries, practitioners and artists, along with unique hospitality and recreational offerings mean that Tech Central doesn’t go dark after hours. These lifestyle and leisure attributes provide an inimitable drawcard for anchor tenants and global tenants who want to live and work in a vibrant place. With unique adapted historical arts and entertainment spaces like Carriageworks, cultural institutions such as Powerhouse Ultimo, dining precincts like Spice Alley and access to Sydney’s world renowned harbour, beaches and parks, Tech Central offers experiences and a sense of place that distinguish it from the ‘business park’ style of innovation districts that can often define its peers.
Home to Central Station, the country’s busiest transport interchange, Tech Central is one of Australia’s most connected places. From Central Station the airport is only 15 minutes by rail and you can easily connect with the rest of Sydney and New South Wales by local and regional trains, buses and light rail. For cycling enthusiasts, Tech Central features one of Sydney’s most comprehensive cycling infrastructure networks. Two new Metro stations are also currently under construction to serve the area.
Transport for NSW manages public transport in Sydney and you can use their helpful trip planning tool or trip planning app to find the best way to move around Tech Central and the rest of the city.
“Good connectivity ensures people can travel to and from places easily, in a fun and safe way. Transport for NSW’s Place-based Transport Strategy, developed in close collaboration with Tech Central stakeholders, aims to make travelling in the Tech Central area even more seamless and connected in future.”
NSW Government is working with NBN Co and a range of industry partners to explore opportunities for its business NBN Enterprise Ethernet product designed to deliver speeds of close to 10Gbps, to be rolled out in the precinct. Tech Central is also supported by three of NBN Co’s Business Fibre Zones and areas of Tech Central have been announced as part of NBN Co’s $3.5 billion network upgrade investment program, enabling customers in eligible premises to order nbn’s highest speed tiers on demand.
Tech Central is home to The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and the University of Sydney who will lead the establishment of the state’s Connectivity Innovation Network. The network will focus on finding innovative research solutions to state wide connectivity challenges such as power resilience, ubiquitous connectivity, sensors, network and cyber automation by bringing together researchers, industry and government agencies to solve connectivity challenges and deliver improved outcomes for citizens.
Tech Central will offer unique opportunities for agile working allowing people to come together to do their best work, when and wherever they need to. Public Wi-Fi in the South Eveleigh Node allows choice and flexibility in your workspace and access to the wider community.
Tech Central will be a test bed for the latest in Smart Cities Technology and Digital Connectivity. A place where new ideas will be implemented that affect how we study, work, and play in the future.
TECH CENTRAL IS LOCATED ON GADIGAL LAND IN THE EORA NATION
Tech Central is located on Gadigal land in the Eora Nation.
Australia’s First Peoples have been creating and innovating for at least 65,000 years. They are the world’s first scientists, engineers, mathematicians and artists.
As home to the world’s oldest continuous culture, this land is steeped in industry, technology, creativity, culture, art and knowledge. Despite the destructive impact of first contact, Gadigal culture has survived, with knowledge and culture passed on through generations.
For thousands of years, this land has been a magnet for Aboriginal peoples seeking opportunities, shelter and connections with community and family. It is home to many places of historical and cultural significance. In recent times, it has been home of the first Aboriginal Football Club and the birthplace of the urban Aboriginal civil rights movement. The 1973 purchase of land known as ‘the Block’ by the Redfern community - fuelled by increasing rents and corporate pressure - was also effectively the first successful land rights claim by an Aboriginal community and Australia’s first housing collective. It remains a hub of innovation and activism for First Nations peoples.
The Barani Barrabugu booklet (also available in the Culture Walks App) is a resource for understanding the Aboriginal Journey as it relates to Gadigal land.
