Sydney’s concentration of startups to rival those of Tel Aviv’s tech hub and California’s Silicon Valley

Professional, scientific and technical industries are already the largest employers of people in the local government area of the City of Sydney. The City of Sydney works closely with these industries, as well as government partners, to develop the ideal environment for tech entrepreneurs to start and grow successful global businesses.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore has a vision to make Sydney the most environmentally sustainable, liveable and innovative city in Australia. The City of Sydney’s Sustainable Sydney 2030 and Tech Start up Action plan articulate this vision.

One of the City of Sydney’s initiatives, along with other NSW government partners, including Transport for NSW, is the development of Central Square, the currently underutilised area around Central Station, the city’s major transport hub.

Central Square will be an expansive, high tech public space with plenty of green areas and connecting walkways so that workers, tourists and residents alike can relax, walk and cycle, day and night, in a vibrant and people friendly environment.

“With increasing numbers of workers and visitors expected in the area over the next 20 years, we need more safe and comfortable spaces for people.
By creating wonderful public spaces, we ensure Sydney is an attractive place for businesses, residents and visitors.”

Clover Moore, Lord Mayor of Sydney.

Tech Central has the opportunity to be the epicentre for technology and innovation in the heart of Sydney

The best technology and innovation precincts around the world are ones where local communities, businesses and educational institutions are in close proximity to one another and can be easily accessed by public and active transport.

Tech Central brings together the neighbourhoods in Sydney where Australia’s innovators, creatives, and thought-leaders want to live, work, collaborate and connect with each other. Clover Moore says:

“Tech Central will be a key part of the future success of our city. The inclusion of 50,000sqm of affordable work space for startups and scaleups is vital to ensuring Tech Central includes a wide range of businesses at every stage of their lifecycle.

Sydney is uniquely positioned as a leader in deep tech. Some of the most exciting innovations in bio-tech, quantum computing and med-tech are happening right now in science and engineering labs and businesses in the areas around Tech Central.

As the precinct continues to grow and adds to this intensity, Tech Central will cement Sydney’s reputation as a world-leading city of innovation.”
